Contrary to popular belief, there is very little funding available to theatres. And now, with the Olympics taking a huge chunk out of the Lottery funds, there is even less. The average fringe show makes a loss. The producers usually take the hit. Why? Because they believe in theatre. They believe in widening participation to allow more people to make theatre and more people to see it. In order for new and innovative theatre to be a reality, it relys upon the generosity of individuals who also have a passion for exciting theatre.

Unfortunately more and more regional theatres and Fringe production companies are disappearing every year. There is a real risk that one of the oldest art forms may again be relegated to a middle class preserve where only £50 per ticket West End shows are able to continue.
