Casting Call | Pedal Pusher

May 10th, 2010 by Roland Smith

TheatreDelicatessen will be transferring their Time Out Critics’ Choice production of Pedal Pusher to the Edinburgh Fringe 2010.

Due to unavailability of one of the original team, we are looking to recast the part of Jan Ullrich.

Pedal Pusher is a compelling piece of physical theatre that draws on interviews, archive footage and news reports to recreate the battles between Lance Armstrong, Jan Ullrich and Marco Pantani - three professional cyclists battling to be champion of the Tour de France.

Using devised performance and physical theatre to depict an extraordinary era in the Tour de France, Pedal Pusher the audience through the mountains, the crashes, the sprints and into the intriguing, dangerous world of professional sport.

Jan Ullrich | Character Breakdown

Jan Ullrich is a male, German professional cyclist in his mid to late twenties, with Athletic / Slim build.

Although Jan has a strong physicality and presence, he is thoughtful and questioning. Having grown up in communist East Germany, Jan finds it hard to deal with the celebrity of being a famous sportsman.

Experience of physical and/or devised theatre preferable

Pedal Pusher Review - Timeout 4 stars

Pedal Pusher Review

"A show about three world-famous cyclists performed on a couple of plastic chairs may not sound like everyone's idea of a good time, but you needn't be a cycling nerd to enjoy 'Pedal Pusher'. "Although this compelling devised piece by theatredelicatessen tells the story of Lance Armstrong, Marco Pantani and Jans Ullrich [sic] - three of the greatest cyclists of their generation - and their one meeting at the Tour de France in 2000, that's not really what it's about. 'Pedal Pusher' is a tale of obsession, sacrifice, of winning at all costs and, above all, about what might have been."

road.cc Reviews Pedal Pusher

Theatre Delicatessen Pedal Pusher

Brilliant! An exhilarating, fact-packed Tour de Force "I'll admit, when they said to me 'Hey up TR, we want you to review a play about Armstrong, Ullrich and Pantani at the Tour de France, it's in a disused warehouse in the West End and they're going to re-enact the Tour, but without any bikes…but with audience participation" "Uh-oh" was my first reaction. Shows what I know, it was brilliant, an exhilarating, informative fact-packed Tour de Force. Anyone who's interested in the Tour won't fail to get something out of it… You will believe that three men on chairs are Armstrong, Ullrich and Pantani battling it out for Tour glory. The amount and depth of information on offer at times might tip things over into the realms of cycle-geekery, but who cares: I'm a cycling geek. If you are one of those cycling racing fans who has already immersed themselves in the details of Tour history much of this might not be new, but even then the engaging manner of the play's presentation really brings it all to life." Radio France Critiques Pedal Pusher

July 16th, 2009 by admin

- Radio France

One week in….

July 16th, 2009 by Josh Cass

And if we were actually riding the Tour de France we would be somewhere around Arcalis by now, as it is, we have just got the first week under our belt. And the overwhelming feeling? A sense that audiences might actually be enjoying the show as much as we are performing it. Going into a project like this which has such a specialist area of interest and such a strong focus on the look and style of it, it was a concern, well... at least to me, that audiences would find it difficult to relate to, but so far so good! We've got a long way to go before Paris though!
