Mercury Fur Review – The British Theatre Guide

the british theatre guide mercury fur review
The first review is in, by Matt Boothman in the British Theatre Guide:

"theatredelicatessen couldn't conceivably have picked a more ideal play with which to kick off their latest found-space residency. Mercury Fur is a perfect fit for a bold young company (provided it's staged with maturity), as well as for the space, a disused office block just off Oxford Street..."

"It's evidence that the controversy that greeted its premiere was not all Mercury Fur had to offer; even with its shocks somewhat blunted by foreknowledge, it just takes the right company in the right space to reveal the heart behind the horrors."

The doors have finally closed on 295 Regent Street, and the preparations are taking place for our move to our new home.

Meanwhile, rehearsals are well underway for production #6.

Watch this space for more information - hopefully we will be able to fill you in on the details by the end of the week.

In the meantime, you might be interested to know that Pedal Pusher was highlighted as one of Time Out's theatre picks of 2009. In fact, they said:

“In ‘Pedal Pusher’, what Theatre Delicatessen managed to do with a couple of plastic chairs and some cycling shorts was pretty spectacular.”

Pedal Pusher: 5 star Remote Goat Review

July 30th, 2009 by admin

"Long with the utmost eagerness" by Maddy Ryle for remotegoat on 29/07/09
"As an ordinary cyclist who uses her bike most days to get about town and sometimes takes it on holiday, and who has had some of her most serene or thought-provoking moments while in the saddle, I am predisposed to see the poetry of self-propulsion. But I've never paid more than scant attention to the Tour de France, so I've never really appreciated the drama of cycling as a sport, in which you challenge not only yourself but others as well. In 'Pedal Pusher' both the poetry and the drama are brought brilliantly to life in a piece of site-specific, promenade, physical theatre that is captivating enough for you to be gripped even if you've not been on a bike since the trike rusted up in the back garden when you were six."

Guardian.co.uk Blog: Cycling on stage? Pedal Pusher is theatrical revolution

July 24th, 2009 by admin

"Cycling on stage? Pedal Pusher is theatrical revolution

"Simulating riders from the Tour de France is no easy thing in the theatre, but Delicatessen are really going places, without even using bikes…

"It seemed audacious to even attempt to stage an account of an event that involves 170-odd men whizzing through France at superhuman speeds. It's hard enough for Eurosport and all of its helicopters and motorbikes to do justice this awesome spectacle, so how on earth could the Tour be recreated in the theatre? "Well, firstly, the young company, Delicatessen, made the smart decision not to use any actual bikes in the action. It's a bold move considering the plot revolves around the world's biggest bike race, and three of cycling's most colourful characters: Lance Armstrong, Marco Pantani and Jan Ullrich, the three riders who vied for supremacy in the late 1990s..."

Pedal Pusher Review: 4 stars in TimeOut London

July 22nd, 2009 by admin

Pedal Pusher Review - Timeout 4 stars

Pedal Pusher Review

"A show about three world-famous cyclists performed on a couple of plastic chairs may not sound like everyone's idea of a good time, but you needn't be a cycling nerd to enjoy 'Pedal Pusher'. "Although this compelling devised piece by theatredelicatessen tells the story of Lance Armstrong, Marco Pantani and Jans Ullrich [sic] - three of the greatest cyclists of their generation - and their one meeting at the Tour de France in 2000, that's not really what it's about. 'Pedal Pusher' is a tale of obsession, sacrifice, of winning at all costs and, above all, about what might have been."
