Mercury Fur Review – The Arts Desk

The arts desk mercury fur review

"Atmospherically directed by Frances Loy, and designed by William Reynolds, this version fields an utterly committed cast led by Matt Granados as Elliot, Chris Urch as Darren, Ben Wigzell as Spinx and Mikey Bharj as Naz. With its bleak humour, and powerful sense of foreboding, this is a dangerous, intense and occasionally excruciating piece of experiential theatre. It is not family viewing. You stumble out of this dark and hellish world, gulping the fresh air of the night, and mighty glad to be alive."

Mercury Fur Review – 4 Stars Boyz Magazine

Boyz Magazine Review

4 Stars Boyz Magazine - Joseph Cattell

"Philip Ridley's fifth adult play, Mercury Fur, which is currently being revived by Theatre Delicatessen in an abandoned schoolhouse, is a punishing and poetic one-act play set in a bleak, post-apocalyptic wasteland.

"Angry, bullying Elliot (Matt Granados) and his softer, needier brother Darren (Chris Urch) are preparing a derelict room for a party when an ebullient neighbour (Mikey Bharj) comes looking for company.

"Partygoers slowly arrive. There's the vicious and domineering Spinx, who boils with a fierce loyalty and cruelty, his lover, a blind Duchess, and a tender and frightened transvestite, Lola, who has come to dress up a guest, known only as Party Piece, as Elvis Presley. We have no ideas why until the grotesque Party Guest – who is paying for some human blood sport – enters.

"As with Philip Ridley's other plays, Mercury Fur is set in a fantastical and hopeless vision of London, where intoxicating dialogue about eating drug-inducing butterflies eventually gives way to an unbearably tense and violent climax. Performed by a universally impressive cast, this is a pungent and disturbing event from a promising theatre company."
